Thousands of years ago, the Mayans made hammocks from tree bark to sleep comfortably in hot, buggy rainforests. Hammocks were light, easy to carry, and kept them off the ground. Later, Christopher Columbus took hammocks to Europe, and sailors loved them because they were soft. Today, the Mayans still make hammocks, and people around the world use them in their homes and backyards.
