Plant Cell Nucleus: The nucleus controls how the cell works, grows and divides. It also contains the chromosomes which carry the genetic codes for the organism. Nucleolus: A membrane-bound organelle that contains the cell's chromosomes. Nuclear envelope: A membrane that separates the nucleus from the cytoplasm. Nuclear pore: Allows molecules to pass in and out of the nucleus. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum: A network of tubules and flattened sacs that lack ribosomes on their outer surface. Plasmodesmata: Small channels in the cell wall that allows communication between neighbouring plant cells. Cytoplasm: A watery jelly where most of the chemical reactions vital to life occur. Vacuole: The vacuole contains a watery liquid called sap. It also stores dissolved plant foods and places pressure on the cell wall to keep it rigid. Tonoplast: Membrane surrounding the vacuole. Peroxisome: Small vesicles that assist in breaking down toxic materials. Cytoskeleton: A network of microfilaments and microtubules that provide structure for the cell. Mitochondrion: Contain the enzymes used to release energy from food for use by the cell. Lysosome: A membrane-bound organelle that removes and breaks down waste produced by the cell. Cell wall: Cell walls are only present in plant cells and give the cell strength and support.
